Welcome to Why Illinois Is Broke

I just visited Springfield with my Leadership McLean County class on Thursday 2/2/12, and heard numerous politicians describe the dire financial straits facing Illinois, and the political gridlock that impedes any meaningful action to deal with the state's $8 billion backlog of unpaid bills.

Meanwhile, I read various local, regional, and national publications that feature stories that detail where significant state money is being spent. Normally, I have shared these on my Facebook account, but realize that most people simply don't care about politics or state government.

Thus, I have decided that any time I see such an article, I will post it here instead in hopes that eventually out of an aggregation of these articles there will emerge a picture of how seemingly insignificant state expenditures can add up to significantly contribute to the deficit Illinois is now facing.

I don't expect politicians to take any action as a result of anything I post, but at least by reading this blog, concerned citizens like myself can better educate themselves on where their taxpayer dollars are being spent - and thus suggest to their legislators where cuts might be made that do not affect vital government services.

If anyone ends up following this blog, I welcome any and all feedback. While I lean conservative when it comes to financial issues facing the state, I am neutral on social issues and welcome any and all comments, so long as they are respectful and free of personal attacks and insults.
